The photographers are crazy. Did the other Star Trek movies ever get this kind of attention? It figures that one would need to dumb Star Trek down in order to get the media excited about the movie.

Do I know that the movie has been dumbed down? It's just a guess based on the trailers--lots of explosions and fancy sequences, all strung together by a plot founded upon time travel and the creation of an alternate timeline.

Why did the TOS movies not have a broad enough appeal? Because they were so focused on the old cast? (Who were really showing their age as time passed...) What would have happened if Star Trek: Phase II had been given a green light instead? Would it have lasted longer than the original Battlestar Galactica?

JJ Abrams may not be as bad as Michael Bay, but he is of the MTV generation, and his filmmaking style shows it.
